An installation restore point is an automatically saved version of the state of an operating system, an application and/or the user’s data that is captured when an application or operating system is installed. If a future problem arises, the user’s data can be restored to the same state as before the installation occurred.

Other types of restore points are system checkpoints (restore points scheduled by the computer) and manual restore points created by the user. Restore points are a part of the Windows OS System Restore utility. In fact, many restore points may exist depending on the use and settings for creating scheduled restore points. However, installation restore points are automatically created whenever an installation takes place. If an OS or application becomes unstable, this utility can be used to restore the system to the same state it had before the difficulty occurred.
