Roaming refers to a wireless network service extension in an area that differs from the registered home network location. Roaming enables a mobile device to access the Internet and other mobile services when out of its normal coverage area. It also gives a mobile device the ability to move from one access point to another. Roaming is derived from real-time optimally adapting mesh (ROAM).

Roaming services are usually provided by cellular service providers as well as Internet service providers (ISP) via a cooperative agreement. Traditional cellular roaming services are provided by both the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) and code division multiple access (CDMA) operators.
